June Summer purification rite (夏越の祓)

Since ancient times, the “Nagoshi-no-harae(夏越の祓)” ceremony has been held on June 30 at shrines around Japan.

This ritual is held on June 30, exactly halfway through the year, to express gratitude for the safe passage of the first half of the year, to purge the impurities that have accumulated over the past six months, and to wish for good health and good fortune for the remaining six months of the year.

A thatched ring larger than a person’s height is set up at the shrine, and visitors walk through it to ward off bad luck.
